Best cbd patches for pain improves memory performance in people with chronic cannabis use disorder (CUD) compared to placebo. However, the clinical trials used vaporised CBD e-liquid and only studied THC and CBD together, so it’s unclear whether CBD alone has the same cognitive effects. Moreover, the results from this study should be treated with caution until replicated. In another recent study, a single dose of CBD did not affect verbal episodic memory or working memory manipulation in healthy participants. The researchers speculated that this may be because CBD’s impact on attention and impulsivity may have outweighed the improvement in backwards digit span.

The present experiment investigated whether acute CBD protects against THC-induced recognition memory impairment using awake fMRI. The authors used the hit rate (H, accuracy in discriminating old vs new words) and false alarm rate (FA, accuracy in distinguishing new vs non-studied words) as primary measures of recognition memory performance. The findings indicate that recognition memory processes are less sensitive to THC than free recall, and this is consistent with previous studies examining the cognitive effects of CBD in psychiatric disorders, ischemic states, and hepatic encephalopathy (Osborne et al. 2017; Romer Thomsen et al. 2017; Zhornitsky and Potvin 2012).

The fMRI results show that acute CBD attenuates BOLD activity in the anterior cingulate cortex, the basolateral amygdala, and the medial dorsal thalamus in response to a conditioned fear stimulus. In addition, rsFC shows that CBD decouples connectivity in the ascending reticular activating system (ARAS). The ARAS is involved in fear, anxiety, and stress behavior, as well as behavioral responses to aversive stimuli such as fear freezing or death feigning. The ARAS also expresses high levels of the cannabinoid receptor agonist anandamide, which activates 5-HT1a and TRPV1 receptors and modulates neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine.
